Preparing For Revision Rhinoplasty

If you are unhappy with the results of a previous rhinoplasty, or if those results have faded over time, then you may want to opt for what's called a revision rhinoplasty. This is a plastic surgery that is meant to improve or correct the results of a previous rhinoplasty. Like most nose surgeries, it can be pretty involved, which makes preparation essential. Follow these tips to better prepare for revision rhinoplasty.

Be clear on what you want

Before you seek out revision rhinoplasty, it is a good idea to do some thinking and decide what, exactly, you don't like about it and what you want to change. Maybe your nose looks too blunt on the end, and you'd like it to be pointy. Maybe your nose is too narrow, and you would like it to be wider and more padded. The more clearly you're able to describe your desired changes to your surgeon, the better able they'll be to amend your nose to your specifications.

Get more than one opinion

There are often multiple ways to fix a rhinoplasty that didn't come out quite right. For example, if there is not enough cartilage on the end of your nose, one surgeon may want to add more cartilage from another site. Another surgeon may want to pad the area with some more fatty tissue. It is therefore a good idea to get several opinions before you schedule your revision rhinoplasty surgery. Ask each surgeon what they plan on doing in the procedure, how it will affect the recovery time, and what results you can expect. You can then choose the surgeon whose approach is most in line with your needs and preferences.

Take extra time off

Having had a rhinoplasty before, you probably have an idea of how long the recovery will take and how long it will be before you're able to go back to work. Patients often assume the recovery will be the same or easier the second time around with revision rhinoplasty. But this is not always the case. Depending on the work your surgeon does, your recovery might be longer this time around. So, leave your schedule open for taking more time off than you did last time, just in case you need it.

Revision rhinoplasty is sometimes necessary in order to get the nose you desire. Follow the tips above as you prepare. If you want to learn more about revision rhinoplasty, talk to a cosmetic surgeon in your area, such as Susan L. Chobanian, M.D.
